American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience difficulties from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in the state to consult airlines about revised flight schedules.

The situation precedes the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to travel by air in the US.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
