European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
