Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
