No less than 64 civilians were killed in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Residents have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, together with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
