Nutrition Assistance Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing Federal Shutdown
USDA officials stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest support systems will not be distributed next month because of the continuing federal closure.
Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks
The government shutdown lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, in response to demands from hundreds of House Democrats urging the department to utilize emergency reserves to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.
“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.
National Consequences
Over 40 million Americans depend on the regular assistance, per official statistics. Some regions, such as New Mexico, reliance on SNAP affects one-fifth of the population.
Internal communications seen by Reuters indicated that federal authorities would not access reserve funds for the upcoming payments.
Political Stalemate
Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked regarding how to finance and restart federal agencies.
A statement from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the administration had chances to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.
“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps earlier to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Conversely, officials could opt out for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to support a funding package that would resume the federal government.
Emergency Measures
Executives in multiple regions activated emergency protocols in recent days to free up resources for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
