The Documentary Legend on His Monumental War of Independence Film Series: ‘This Is Our Most Crucial Work’

The veteran filmmaker has become beyond being a filmmaker; his name is a franchise, a prolific creative force. When he has documentary series heading for the small screen, everybody wants a part of him.

He participated in “more fucking podcasts than I ever thought possible”, he says, nearing the end of nine-month promotional tour that included four dozen cities, dozens of preview events plus countless media sessions. “With podcasts numbering in the hundreds of millions, I feel I’ve participated in a substantial portion.”

Thankfully Burns possesses boundless energy, as expressive in conversation as he is productive during post-production. At seventy-two has traveled from historical sites to The Joe Rogan Experience to talk about one of his most ambitious projects: The American Revolution, an extensive six-episode, twelve-hour film project that consumed the past decade of his life and premiered this week on PBS.

Timeless Filmmaking Method

Comparable to methodical preparation in an age of fast food, Burns’ latest project proudly conventional, reminiscent of historical documentary classics than the era of digital documentaries audio documentaries.

Massive Research Effort

The filmmaking team plus scripting partner Geoffrey Ward referenced thousands of books and primary source materials. Burns emphasizes: “Frankly, this may be the best single cast gathered for any production. They do an extraordinary service. Their celebrity status wasn’t the criteria. It irritated me when questioned, regarding the famous participants. I responded, ‘These are performers.’ They represent global acting excellence and they animate historical material.”

Multifaceted Story

Nevertheless, the lack of surviving participants, photography and newsreels compelled the production to lean heavily on historical documents, combining the first-person voices of numerous historical characters. This methodology permitted to present viewers not just the famous founders of that era plus numerous additional essential to the narrative, several participants remain visually unknown.

Burns also indulged his particular enthusiasm for geography and cartography. “I love maps,” he observes, “featuring increased geographical representation in this project compared to previous works throughout my entire career.”

In his view, the revolution is a story that “for most of us is drowning in sentimentality and idealization and lacks depth and fails to properly acknowledge for what actually took place, all contributors and the widespread bloodshed.”

It was, he contends, an uprising that declared the world-changing idea of inherent human rights; a brutal civil war, pitting Patriots against Loyalists; and a worldwide engagement, another installment in a sequence of conflicts between Britain, France and Spain for control of the continent.
