Pyrotechnics Ban and New Changes

For the past four years, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the city as winter begins.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government appealed to the supreme court to seek a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Court Verdict and Enforcement

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various studies.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be causing 10,000 untimely deaths annually in the city.
