Tropical Storm the storm is projected to become a rare Category 5 hurricane as it turns in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous rapid inundation and rock falls.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean and is projected to make landfall by early next week, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been issued as this storm brings up to 76cm of rain and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been told.

The cyclone is the thirteenth hurricane in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in November.

Highest-Level Storm Danger

A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is set to diminish in strength to a Category 4 storm before making landfall on Jamaica, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it impacts the nation.

Urgent Safety Steps

With storm-force winds and rain predicted to begin long before it crosses Jamaica's central region - perhaps encompassing the national capital - advisories indicate that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause severe and deadly flash flooding and multiple mudslides," urged climate experts.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official said: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: you should be concerned.

"However the best way to handle worry and any nervousness and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Inhabitants are being told to secure their homes with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to gather necessary supplies.

Wider Impact

Alerts are also in effect for areas in Haiti including the capital, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is anticipated to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Rock slides already being caused by the storm have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Path

Melissa is predicted to cross the island nation by the middle of the week before traveling via the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a Category 3 hurricane.

Although it is difficult to associate specific storms to global warming, scientists say it is causing meteorological events more prevalent and more severe.

Warmer oceans create greater water vapor in the atmosphere, contributing to the development of hurricanes.
